How to test a hair color in three steps

1. Upload a photo taken in daylight

   Window light or open shade shows tone most honestly. Keep the hair visible, skip the filters, and avoid a warm indoor bulb, which pushes every shade yellow before you have judged anything.

2. Pick a shade or a technique

   Solid shades, highlights, balayage, ombre, money piece and fashion colors, or type a shade name. Render the cool version and the warm version of the same level side by side.

3. Check it against your skin and brows

   Your eyebrows are not colored in the render, so they are the fastest tell that a shade is fighting you. Save the ones that survive that test and bring them to the consultation.

Which hair color suits your skin tone?

Undertone matters more than how light or dark your skin is. Look at the inside of your wrist in daylight: veins that read blue or purple point to a cool undertone, veins that read green point to a warm one, and if you honestly cannot tell you are most likely neutral and can wear most of the chart.

Two other checks usually agree with it. Silver jewelry tends to sit better on cool undertones and gold on warm ones, and skin that burns before it tans usually reads cool. None of these is a rule. Together they narrow twelve shades to three worth rendering.

Because the render leaves your eyebrows and lashes alone, a shade that fights your undertone shows up on the photo the same way it would in the mirror, which is the whole point of doing it before the appointment.

What the test shows you and what it cannot

The recolor sits on the hair only, shaded strand by strand, with the root left a shade deeper than the mid-lengths. Skin, eyebrows and lashes are not tinted with it. That is exactly the shortcut a photo filter takes, and the reason a filter flatters every shade equally.

Why going lighter is a calendar question, not a color question

What decides the possible is your hair history, not the shade you picked. Going more than two or three levels lighter than your natural base takes bleach, and bleach behaves differently on virgin hair, on hair permanently colored dark, on henna and on box dye. That is why a colorist asks about all four before quoting anything.

Dark hair passes through orange and yellow on the way to pale, so the first session often lands warmer than the reference picture, and a cool ash result is usually a second appointment with a toner rather than one long day. Toner is also the first thing to wash out, which means the shade you leave with is not the shade you will have in six weeks.

None of that is visible in a photograph, yours or anyone else's. Use the render to decide the direction you want, and let a colorist who can see and feel your hair tell you how many appointments that direction costs.

How often each technique needs redoing

The maintenance schedule decides more than the price of the first appointment does. Techniques differ far more in how often you come back than in how they look on day one, and over a year the more expensive service is frequently the cheaper one.

• Solid color and root touch-up every four to six weeks, because regrowth draws a hard line at the parting
• Foil highlights every six to eight weeks, with a visible line at the root once they are due
• Balayage and babylights every three to four months, since hand-painted pieces grow out without an edge
• Money piece the smallest version of the same idea, and the cheapest way to test whether you want to go lighter at all
• Toner or gloss every four to six weeks whatever the technique, because it is the first layer to wash away

Gray coverage, and growing it out again

For gray coverage, a shade one level lighter than your natural color almost always reads softer than an exact match, and it makes the regrowth line less abrupt later. Rendering both next to each other is the quickest way to see the difference, because an exact match tends to look right in the salon and heavy in daylight.

Going the other way, gray blending is the middle step that makes growing it out survivable: lighter pieces are woven through the gray so the boundary is diffused rather than drawn. It is a look that is much easier to commit to once you have seen it on your own hair rather than on somebody with a different base.

What to bring to the consultation

Bring two saved renders rather than one, and bring the one you rejected too. Colorists read a pair faster than they read a description, and the rejected shade carries information a single reference photo never does: the direction you do not want.

Then describe the maintenance rather than only the color. How often you are willing to come back, whether you mind a visible root, and what has been on your hair in the last two years will change the recommendation more than the name of the shade will.
